‘Do not travel today’ – LNER’s advice after overhead wire damage causes chaos

Here’s the latest from LNER as severe problems hit our railways again.

They say: “We’re currently experiencing major disruption to our train services due to damage to the overhead electric wires between London Kings Cross and Peterborough.

“All lines are blocked and are expected to remain so for the rest of day.

“We are advising not to travel today, Tuesday 26 July, between London Kings Cross and Peterborough due to the severity of today’s disruption.

“Please do not go to London Kings Cross station today.

“For stations north of Peterborough, we will operate a very limited service. However this will be subject to disruption and short notice cancellations.”

This comes a day before strike action is due to cripple the railways again.

“Customers with tickets dated Tuesday 26 July can use their tickets at no extra cost on Thursday 28 and Friday 29 July,” LNER says. “Please note that is not possible to use tickets tomorrow, Wednesday 27 July, as there is a reduced timetable operating due to industrial action.“

North Yorkshire road closed for five days

Away from the railways, a YorkMix Radio listener informs us of a road closure that’s happening this week.

Oxton Lane, Bolton Percy to Tadcaster is closed daily from 7.30am to 5.30pm for five days from today.

National Rail says the disruption will last all day

Disruption to rail services to and from London Kings Cross is expected until the end of the day, National Rail has warned.

It says:

Damage to the overhead electric wires between Peterborough and Stevenage means all lines are currently blocked.

As a result of this, trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 120 minutes or revised.

Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.

The routes affected include:

  • Grand Central between Sunderland / Bradford Interchange and London Kings Cross
  • Hull Trains between Beverley / Hull and London Kings Cross
  • LNER between Berwick-Upon-Tweed / Edinburgh / Aberdeen / Newcastle / Middlesbrough / Stirling / Sunderland / Skipton / Hull / Bradford Forster Square / Harrogate / York / Lincoln / Leeds and London Kings Cross.

Passengers can defer travel till later in the week

Passengers hit by today’s rail disruption can use their tickets later this week, says LNER.

With a train strike hitting tomorrow, the rail operators say tickets can be deferred until 28 and 29 July only.

It tweeted: “We strongly advise customers to make a new seat reservation for travel.”

Major rail disruption: Police incident and power failure bring train chaos north and south of York

An information board with the bad news at York Station this morning

Rail passengers going north and south of York on the East Coast Main Line are being hit by severe delays and cancellations.

Due to problems with the overhead lines, services are currently unable to run in or out of London Kings Cross.

Damage to electric wires between Peterborough and Stevenage means all lines are currently blocked.

LNER says: “As a result of this, trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised.

“Major disruption is expected until 11am.”

Meanwhile trains running north are being delayed due to “emergency services dealing with an incident”. We have no more details on that one yet.

This comes the day before another rail strike which is set to cause yet more disruption to travellers.

More as we get it.

Wigginton Road will stay closed till Sunday due to burst water mains

There will be no quick fix to get Wigginton Road moving again.

The road, which has been closed from York Hospital to Crichton Avenue, is not set to reopen until Sunday, it has just been revealed.

Two separate water main bursts have caused the closure, and engineers are now at the scene looking to put things right – but it’s a long job.

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson told YorkMix:

We have experienced two unrelated bursts on a large water main on Wigginton Road.

The bursts have caused significant damage to the road surface.

Our teams are working hard to complete the repairs quickly and reinstate the road to keep disruption to a minimum.

We are expecting the road to reopen on Sunday.
