Police have issued a new statement about the operation that saw armed officers sent to the town as schools went into lockdown.
The incident on Thursday (30 March) was sparked when a member of the public saw a man with a gun in the town.
On the day he was said to have “left the area” and police were satisfied that there was no threat to the school children or residents.
Today (Saturday, 1 April), North Yorkshire Police issued an update.
A spokesperson said: “We can now confirm that a man was arrested the following day on suspicion of carrying an air weapon in public.
“He has surrendered the weapon into police custody and has been issued with a police caution for carrying an air weapon in public.
“We are satisfied that he did not intend to cause any alarm to any members of the public.”
Several schools initiated lockdown procedures on the day and were praised by police “for their quick-thinking to protect their pupils and staff from potential harm”.
