A man has appeared in court charged with murder following an alleged stabbing in York which resulted in the death of a “beloved” father and husband.

Greg Marshall, 35, from York, died following the incident which occurred at about 4.45am.

Mr Franklin, of Roche Avenue, was subsequently charged with murder and possessing a bladed article.

A second York man, who is also 33 but who can’t be named for legal reasons at this stage, was also arrested in connection with the incident and was charged with affray and two counts of carrying a bladed article, namely a multi-tool axe and a machete.

Both men appeared at York Magistrates’ Court today but neither entered pleas to the charges.

Police were called to the estate at 4.45am on Saturday following reports of a serious assault. They found Mr Marshall who was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Detective Inspector Dominic Holroyd, of North Yorkshire Police, said after the incident: “Our thoughts are with Greg’s family and friends at this very sad time.

“We recognise the distress and disruption this has caused within the community.”

Mr Gregory’s family later issued a statement in which they said their “hearts are broken”.

The statement added: “It’s with the deepest sadness that we as a family are having to announce the sudden passing of Greg Marshall, our beloved son, father, husband, brother, uncle and loyal friend to many far and wide.”

District judge Adrian Lower sent the case to Leeds Crown Court where both defendants will appear tomorrow (Wednesday, 21 August). Both men were remanded in custody until then.
