A man who dumped asbestos among the bottlebanks of a small York recycling facility has been fined for fly tipping.
Martin Smith of Pottery Lane, Heworth, York, dumped asbestos sheets at Union Terrace household recycling area in February.
At York Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (December 23) he pleaded guilty of fly tipping.

Mr Smith said that he had not been feeling well at the time of the offence but knew that the proper place to dispose of the asbestos from his allotment shed was at the James Street waste and recycling site.
He was fined £320 and ordered to pay a surcharge of £32, together with prosecution costs of £634.35 and a criminal court charge of £180, bringing the total to £1,164.35.
In sentencing him, the chairwoman of the Bench said that this was “an unpleasant and unnecessary offence”.
Anti-social behaviour
The prosecution comes as part of work by City of York Council to crack down on fly tipping.
Councillor David Carr, executive member for housing and safer neighbourhoods, said the council was working with residents and businesses to make York a cleaner place to live by encouraging more recycling, responsible waste disposal and measures to prevent littering.
