Quill out guys – there’s only a world record attempt coming to York!

Every year Britain’s Quilling Guild stages a display in a different part of the country. And this year, they are holding it in the Folk Hall, New Earswick – an event made particularly special by a world record attempt to assemble ‘the greatest number of quilled flowers in one place’.

At this point we should explain what quilling is, for those who don’t know. It’s the ancient art of manipulating narrow strips of paper and shaping them to create exquisite, intricate designs.

Exponents can make pictures and greetings cards from quilled paper, and decorate boxes and furniture.

More details

Open to the public, the Quilling Guild’s annual display celebrating the fine art of paper filigree takes place on Saturday, September 17.

Visitors will see displays of quilled pictures, greetings cards, free-standing 3D quillings and quilled boxes. There will be competition entries and displays from around the UK and from abroad.

The highlight of the event will be a display of more than 6,000 flowers, made entirely from paper strips and glue, which have been assembled for the world record attempt.

People can learn about quilling, share ideas and gain inspiration from some of the world’s best-known quillers.

There’s also a display and demonstration of quilling in York Castle Museum on Friday, September 2 with a chance to try your hand at it.
