A new café bar is planned in the centre of York, as the city looks to build back its hospitality industry after the pandemic.

The new venture will be at 7 Castlegate, in what has most recently been an e-cigarette shop, e-mist.

A licensing application has been submitted to City of York Council by a company called Hardey’s, which was registered in April.

The company says the business will specialise in natural and organic wines, beers and spirits, and a food menu of dishes such as charcuterie boards, made using local ingredients.

The company has asked for a licence that would allow it to open from 10am to 1am every day.

Increasing trade… Castlegate

Castlegate is likely to enjoy increased trade, having been identified as a preferred access route into the area around Clifford’s Tower, once it is redeveloped.

As YorkMix has reported, designers want the area to become home to an events space, play area, grassed area and cultural space.

The street was also identified by the city council as one of the streets where café activity could be expanded, in response to the pandemic.

Despite the large number of business closures over the past year, locally and nationally, there has been a flurry of applications for new food and drink businesses in York, including the new Jimmy’s bar in Low Petergate, plans for a new community café in Bishophill, the takeover of the Lamb and Lion by new owners, a new cheesecake shop in Shambles, and a new venue for Melk.
