Network Rail’s £3m project to make Northallerton station more accessible is underway as changes to the subway are taking place and new lifts are installed.

The project forms part of the Access for All scheme, funded by your tax payments, which aims to improve accessibility at stations.

Lifts will be installed on both platforms at Northallerton making it easier for passengers to move between them.

Essential work to install new handrails, lay new flooring and replace the ramp in the subway will take place on 12th and 13th February.

The subway will be closed during this time and no step-free access will be available at Northallerton until the lifts are installed on 31st March.

Network Rail commented on the work underway at Northallerton to improve accessibility at the station.

Sarah Reid, Route Director for Network Rail’s East Coast route said: “We’re here to create a railway that works for everyone.

“The new lifts at Northallerton station will help us to achieve that.

“The improvements will provide a better experience for all station users, as well as making it easier for those who need assistance to use the station independently.

Ms Reid added: “While we install the lifts, there will temporarily be no step-free access between the platforms.

“We’re asking passengers to arrive at the correct drop-off point and speak to station staff if they need any help.”

TransPennine Express (TPE) are excited by the work taking place to improve the passenger experience at Northallerton.

Kathryn O’Brien, Customer Experience Director for TPE said: “We are thrilled that work is underway to enhance the accessibility of Northallerton.

“Both the subway enhancements and the installation of lifts will improve the experience for customers at the station.

“We continue to work with Network Rail to minimise any disruption and customers are advised to plan ahead.

“Customers requiring step-free access onto platform 2 will need to use the long stay car park entrance.”
