To celebrate Europe Day on Sunday 9 May, York for Europe is publishing a new trail to celebrate York’s connections to the continent.
It will be titled ‘York in Europe, Europe in York’.
The trail will explore York’s wide European heritage – through buildings, businesses, communities, individual stories and belongings.
The trail starts with three key points of York’s European connections: the old trading rivers of the Ouse and Foss, the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, and the National Railway Museum which exhibits historic and modern rail links across the Channel.
It will then move on to highlight 19 individual European countries present in York today – Italy, Finland, Portugal and Slovakia to name just a few.
York for Europe hopes that the people of York will enjoy a different way of looking at their city with perhaps some surprises, and that European residents in York and tourists from mainland Europe will find some of their history built into the city.
