Now you see it – now you don’t… York’s fountain vanishes from view as demolition crew move in

The hoardings hide York's fountain

‘Meet me at the fountain.’

It was such a familiar refrain in York. But today the words became redundant.

The Parliament Street fountain has vanished from view as workers move in to remove it for good.

On the first day of the planned two weeks’ removal work, the team put up 6ft hoardings around the octagonal water feature.

When they come down it will have gone forever.

Move along, nothing to see here…

According to City of York Council, the work will involve “taking up the stone and block surrounding the fountain, and relaying them on an enhanced surface once the fountain has been removed”.

A temporary floral display will be put in its place.

Remain a focal point

Meanwhile a group involving York BID and the council is to draw up proposals for future intermediate use of the well-known city centre space.

Councillor Peter Dew, executive member for transport and planning, said:

We had to make this decision because the fountain has been out of action for a number of years and is now beyond repair.

We are determined to make sure that this area continues to serve as a focal point in our city centre, and I look forward to receiving the proposals soon.

The fountain has been unable to spurt in anger since the ‘Splash Palace’ toilet block was demolished, taking the underground water supply with it.

Removal work will take place from 8am – 3.30pm Monday to Friday. Barrier and hording protection will be in place during the works.
