Motorists who put other road users at risk by speeding will be the focus of attention across the North Yorkshire and the City of York this week.
This is part of the TISPOL Europe-wide speed awareness campaign, aimed at raising motorists’ awareness of the dangers of speeding as well as enforcing speed limits.
The week of action begins on Monday 19 August and runs until Sunday 25 August 2013.
Also targeted in the campaign will be people drink driving, using mobile phones and not wearing seatbelts while they are behind the wheel.
Traffic Inspector Paul Cording, of North Yorkshire Police’s Roads Policing Group, said: “If you think that speeding is only a trivial offence you need to think again. Excessive and inappropriate speeding not only raises the risk of you being involved in a collision, but also the severity of injury you and others involved would suffer.
“It is believed that around a quarter of collisions resulting in death or serious injury involves at least one vehicle travelling in excess of the speed limit.”
Inspector Cording added: “Drivers who break the law by drinking, using a mobile phone while driving or not wearing a seatbelt need to be aware that they will be in our sights and will be stopped when we spot them.
