A brand new coffee shop opened its doors this weekend (17 August), the product of an exciting collaboration between two established coffee companies.

Independent bar and coffee shop North South, on Bootham, and York-based coffee roasting company, Divine Coffee Roasters, have partnered to launch the new business, The Divine Project.

Located on 22-24 Market Street, the speciality coffee shop is centred around freshly roasted coffee from Divine Coffee Roasters, offering a ‘collaboration of independence’ right in the heart of the city.

When asked how the idea originated, the owner Richard Taylor, told YorkMix: “It was a bit of a chance meeting, we decided that we could work well together, managing the coffee shops as well as North South, and they can roast great coffee.”

The site, which was previously The Early Learning Centre, and then Toymaster, is situated close by a couple of large chain coffee shops. Richard, however, is confident in their offering: “I’d say Divine Coffee is outstanding, and we wanted to bring a bit of an independent feel to the city centre.”

Staying local is important to The Divine Project, with their bakes stocked by The Little Blondie Bakehouse in Walmgate, and pastries from Scandinavian specialist bakery Baltzersen’s of Harrogate.

Coffee lovers can buy Divine’s coffee beans to take home, with the shop able to grind the beans on site to suit any machines.

With a relaxed, minimalist feel, all sorts of sweet and savoury treats to enjoy, as well as a large selection of reasonably priced coffees and teas, The Divine Project is a much-welcomed addition to the city centre.
