Pictures: York reopens under Tier 2 rules

Shops, cafes, pubs, restaurants and attractions have reopened in York today after the end of the second coronavirus lockdown.

Shambles Market is now open again to all traders, not just those deemed essential.

Also opening today are a variety of local street food vendors spread out on Parliament Street serving seasonal food, mulled wine and hot chocolate.

Traders will include KREP and Shambles Kitchen (who can also be found on the Shambles Market Food Court), The Treehouse, Vines Mulled Wine and The Cattle Shed (who can also be found on Coppergate).

Also on Parliament Street is the vintage carousel, which offers old school, outdoor socially-distanced fun.

Noticeably busier

York Minster has reopened for public worship

The city centre was busier than in recent days, but far from packed. Noticeably though, there were a few more smiles on shoppers’ faces.

Under the rules, restaurants and cafes can reopen – as can pubs, as long as they serve a substantial meal with any drinks.

York Minster has reopened for public worship today December and will be open for sightseeing visits from tomorrow (Thursday).

The York Castle Museum has opened offering a 35-minute Christmas experience to visitors who book in advance.

The National Railway Museum reopens to visitors tomorrow.

There’s been a steady stream of shoppers down Shambles

Managing director of Make It York Sean Bullick said: “The Christmas period is hugely important for traders and businesses across the city, especially as we come out of this second national lockdown.

“Our marketing activity focuses on championing York’s local businesses and delivering plans to ensure a welcoming and safe Christmas experience for residents and visitors.”

City of York Council’s Cllr Andrew Waller said “York is known worldwide as a city with a fantastic festive atmosphere at Christmas time. This year’s celebrations will be different to those we have enjoyed in previous years, but the festive spirit will still be strong in the city.

“We are lucky enough to be home to an amazing range of independent retailers in the city, and they have put in a great effort to ensure they meet all the Covid secure guidelines.

“Our stores are ready to welcome shoppers back in a safe way as they prepare for Christmas.”
