Plans for first phase of new council homes to be revealed

Fri 3 May, 2013 by Press Release

Issued by City of York Council

Residents are being invited to view City of York Council’s proposed plans for the first phase of building new, much-needed council homes, at a drop-in event.

The council is proposing to build up to 30 new homes on the former Beckfield Lane refuse site, subject to planning permission. The development was outlined in City of York Council’s recently-published, five-year housing plan and the proposals include a range of houses and apartments, with a mix of new council homes for rent and also for properties for sale on the open market. Any surplus raised from these sales will subsidise the construction of more homes in the future.

The designs will be similar to those used at Archer Close, the first council houses to be built in over 20 years.

The drop-in event will be held on May 8 at Carr Junior School, Ostman Road, Acomb, YO26 5QA, from 4.30-8pm. Representatives from the council’s housing development team and the architect will be available to meet residents and answer their questions.

Councillor Tracey Simpson-Laing, City of York Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Housing and Adult Social Care, said: “With our waiting list edging ever higher, it’s becoming more and more urgent to provide local people with good-quality, affordable housing. Adding an element of housing for private sale works well to help finance future building projects and to create a sustainable, mixed community.”

Once the planning application has been submitted at the end of May, residents can comment formally on the proposals.

Anyone unable to attend the drop-in event but who would like to discuss the proposals are asked to contact andy.kerr@york.gov.uk or call 01904 554 153.
