Police remind vehicle owners about car security

Fri 19 Apr, 2013 by Press Release

Issued by North Yorkshire Police

With the fine weather set to continue throughout the weekend, North Yorkshire Police are reminding vehicle owners about security when visiting beauty spots.

Thefts from vehicles can take a matter of seconds, with thieves smashing a window and grabbing items left on display. Opportunist thieves look for easy targets which will minimise their chances of getting caught.

Inspector Neil Northend, of the Hambleton and Richmondshire Safer Neighbourhood Command, said: “When you are leaving your vehicle in a local beauty spot, I am asking you to take a few moments to make sure that it is as secure as possible.

“Check that you’ve locked the doors and there isn’t anything of value on view, even clothing.

Inspector Northend added: “If you see anyone acting in a suspicious manner in isolated areas, I urge you to contact North Yorkshire Police straight away.”

People are urged to take some simple precautions will help reduce their chances of being a victim of car crime:

  • If they have a satellite navigation system, as well as putting it in the glove box or boot they should make sure that any marks are wiped off the windscreen
  • Close the windows and sunroof; lock the doors
  • Remember to activate any security devices when leaving the car unattended
  • Think about where they are parking your car, make sure it’s in as open and well illuminated public space as possible
  • Don’t leave cash, credit cards, chequebook, mobile phones, vehicle documents or other valuables in the car
  • Make sure keys are never left in cars, even for a few moments

For more crime prevention advice please contact you local Safer Neighbourhood Team or visit www.northyorkshire.police.uk/crimeprevention.

Anyone who witnesses a theft taking place or has information about people committing this type of offence is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1 and pass the details to the Force Control Room.

Or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
