Police are asking shops to sign up to a new system to help them fight back against business crime.

Officers will be visiting retailers in York and North Yorkshire during Safer Business Action Week “to understand more about the issues they are facing on a daily basis”, the force said.

The force will be running extra patrols, targeting prolific offenders and focusing on crime prevention activity over the week.

North Yorkshire Police say there will be

  • proactive visits to shops, supermarkets and out-of-town retail centres
  • drop-in sessions encouraging members of the public to sign up to North Yorkshire Community Messaging
  • and extra high-visibility patrols in busy shopping areas to deter criminals and provide reassurance.

Officers will also be promoting North Yorkshire Police’s new digital evidence management system. Since its launch in July, more than 460 accounts have signed up to the force’s NICE Investigate portal – including 220 local businesses.

Registering with the system allows users to upload security camera footage through a web portal, allowing evidence to be sent to investigators quickly and easily.

“Safer Business Action Week is an opportunity to focus on the resources we put in to protecting staff, and deterring and disrupting persistent offenders,” said Chief Inspector Ryan Chapman.

“We also want to highlight our investment in new technology, which is already making our investigations more efficient.

“Criminals will soon get the message that their image can be sent directly to the police with the click of the button, giving us every opportunity to bring them to justice promptly.”
