Prince Charles was in York today, Monday, July 22, touring two of our biggest attractions – the Minster and Railway Museum. His visit came shortly after news broke that his daughter in law Kate Middleton was in labour.

During his visit the Prince said he had no idea how things were progressing with the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington – a comment treated as “breaking news” which was immediately flashed around the world. Instead he concentrated on something more tangible – old locomotives.

Charles is patron of the Mallard 75 celebrations at the NRM. He steamed into the museum on a royal carriage pulled by Bittern, one of the six remaining A4 locos which had been reunited at the NRM, before touring the exhibits.

Later he looked around the new Revealing York Minster exhibition in the great church’s undercroft. And the prince even tried his hand at stonemasonry among the craftspeople at the Minster Stoneyard.

Here is a selection of responses from York – and the world – to his visit.

Railway station teeming with police in anticipation of Prince Charles's arrival. I wonder if he'll get the call while in the Minster!

One thing I'm enjoying about the Royal Baby TV coverage is the reports from York and the NRM re: Prince Charles' visit to #Mallard75.
