‘Scandalous and shameless’: York doctor complains of terrible food in £1,750 quarantine hotel

A York doctor is spending a small fortune to quarantine after a trip abroad – and says the hotel food is paltry and appalling.

Sanjay Gupta is a leading consultant cardiologist based in York. He is now in a government-approved quarantine hotel in London after returning from a trip to visit his father in Kenya, who passed away while he was there.

He has had to spend £1,750 pounds to stay ten days in the hotel – and says the food is scandalous and that he is being fleeced.

He’s been speaking to David Dunning on the Late Show on YorkMix Radio.

Dr Gupta complained via his Twitter account that for £175 per night he gets three meals like the one in his pictures. Breakfast was two vegetarian sausages in a small bap, while lunch was a plastic box with some chips inside.

“The meals were very paltry, very small,” Dr Gupta said.

“On what basis has the government decided that this is an appropriate charge to make – to not give us a choice, you have to pay this much money and then we can treat you how we want to treat you.”

Although he is from Yorkshire he was told “that’s how they like it in this country.”

Dangerous journey

He’s been stuck at the Courtyard by Marriot, near London’s City Airport, since arriving from Kenya on Friday. He has not tested positive and Kenya was not a red list country when he arrived there on 2 March.

Dr Gupta also has the the “pleasure” of cleaning his own room, and has serious concerns about the journey by bus from Heathrow to the hotel.

This took FIVE hours and was overcrowded. He says that put him at risk of infection.

The hotel is now reported to be in discussions with Dr Gupta to try and resolve the complaints. Dr Gupta says the Government has a lot of questions to answer about where the money is going.

He says they certainly are not spending it on accommdation and food.
