A section of the A64 will be closed this weekend.

Essential maintenance on the Flixton Carr Bridge between Staxton and Seamer is being carried out by National Highways.

The work will be carried out 24/7 starting at 8pm tonight (Friday 7 October) and is due to be complete by 6am on Monday (10 October), weather permitting.

To carry out the work, the A64 will be closed in both directions between Staxton and Seamer for the whole weekend.

The work will re-waterproof the bridge over the River Hertford, replace the expansion joints which absorb its natural movement, resurface the carriageway and renew road markings and studs.

National Highways project manager Simon Taylor said:  “Our work will make sure the carriageway is well maintained and protected from the weather, which reduces the need for future roadworks in the area.

“We are doing it in term time after the school summer holidays, to ease the impact on nearby tourist attractions. We have worked closely with the local authority to devise a diversion route to minimise the impact of traffic on this rural community.”

Diversions

Fully-signed diversions, which have also been agreed with the police, will be in place using the A169, A170 and B1261.

The diversion will increase travel time by up to 40 minutes, so customers are advised to plan their journeys in advance.

National Highways is spending around £5m this financial year (2022-2023), improving journeys and safety for the thousands of drivers who use the A64 every day.

Other work includes:

A64 Slip road repairs

Resurfacing works are planned to improve the condition of the slip roads around Brambling Fields and the Pickering interchange. Work will be carried out overnight under road closures to minimise disruption to customers.

A64 Seamer Station bridge joint repair

Replacement of the expansion joints and re-surfacing of the carriageway is planned to help maintain the structure and protect the substructure from deterioration. Work will be carried overnight under a road closure to minimise disruption to customers.

A64 Scampston Hall

Phase 2 of the cultural heritage work that we started a few years ago. Work includes repairing and repointing the wall between the A64 and the Scampston Hall estate. Work is likely to be carried out with limited traffic management in spring of 2023.

A64 Sand Hutton drainage renewal

Drainage repairs between Hazelbush crossroads and the junction for Sand Hutton. Work will be carried out overnight using traffic signals.

A64 Askham Bryan Junction Improvement

The scheme involves substantial work to improve the capacity of the junction, and to reduce the congestion on the eastbound exit slip road.

“Work is subject to a number of third party approvals and we expect to start the main work in 2023,” National Highways says. In advance of this there will be some major gas diversions required which will likely to be carried out in spring 2023.

A64 Askham Bryan lighting renewal

The renewal of a number of life-expired lighting columns and replacement of lighting units with LED lights. Work planned for late autumn and will involve various slip road closures.

A64 Traffic signal replacement Rillington, Sherburn & Staxton

They’re replacing traffic signals on the A64 in the villages of Rillington, Sherburn & Staxton. The works will involve installing extra low voltage equipment, reducing our carbon footprint and improving the reliability of the traffic lights for road users.

We are planning on undertaking this work in late autumn/winter 2022 and will be utilising innovative traffic management to minimise disruption as much as possible
