Selby starts consultation into changes to rules which control taxis

Thu 22 Jul, 2021 by David Dunning

Filed Under: News Tagged With: North Yorkshire

The Department for Transport has updated its Statutory Taxi & Private Hire Vehicle Standards and now Selby District Council is consulting on their taxi and private hire policies.

It is looking to change them so they are in line with the new standards.

The council is looking for feedback and any supporting evidence to help shape the changes.

The council must have regard to the requirements of this guidance and should only deviate from the Government recommendations where there are compelling reasons to do so.

Several of the proposed standards are already in place. But these are some of the changes that they are looking to adopt.

Enhanced DBS checks for drivers

The Department for Transport recommends that driver licence holders undergo enhanced DBS checks at more frequent intervals every six months.

Self-reporting

The Department for Transport recommends that licence holders should notify Licensing Services within 48 hours of an arrest and release, charge or conviction for sexual, violent, dishonest or motoring offences. (This reduces the current 3-day limit)

CCTV and audio recordings

The Department for Transport expects that Licensing Authorities consult to identify if there are local circumstances that indicate that the installation of CCTV in vehicles would have either a positive or negative effect on the safety of taxi and private hire vehicle users, including children and vulnerable adults, and taking into account any privacy issues.

The Council’s policy currently permits CCTV in vehicles if requested by the driver.

One of the questions they are asking is do you think that it should be a mandatory requirement to have CCTV and audio recording in all licensed vehicles.
