Six people have been taken to hospital after an accident involving three vehicles on the outskirts of York.

Emergency services were called to the scene near Grimston Bar at 1.30pm on Monday (August 15).

Three vehicles – two cars and a commercial vehicle – were involved.

A police spokesman said:

Police can confirm that six people have been taken to various hospitals in the area by land and air ambulance following the collision.

The road has now been reopened in both directions with an on-off diversion in place at Grimston Bar and drivers are being warned to expect delays and avoid the area if possible.

The accident closed the A64 in both directions between Fulford and Hopgrove to allow emergency services to tend to the incident. The road reopened shortly before 4pm.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has sent three fire crews from York and Huntington stations.

The brigade’s incident support unit from Tadcaster, which carries heavy rescue gear, also attended.

A64 is closed both directions between junctions at #Hopgrove & #Fulford. We anticipate the road being closed for some time.

***Update*** #A64 open both directions with a diversion over Grimston Bar. Again, please take care when passing through

The road closure brought traffic to a standstill. At the incident’s height one officer described the affected stretch of road as “a big fat car park”.

Diversions took traffic along Fulford Road, leading to delays heading in and out of Fulford and Hull Road.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police’s control room on 101, quoting reference number NYP-15082016-0238.
