Here’s a stylish new way to support York businesses.
A second design for the popular York Gift Card has been unveiled, featuring another city landmark – Clifford’s Tower.
There had only been one design since the card launched in October 2019, featuring York Minster.
Now shoppers have a choice – with the castle card enjoying a vivid pink backdrop. Both designs are by the same York artist, Jonathan Williams.
The gift card is run by the York BID (Business Improvement District) and takes the headache out of choosing a gift, with more than 300 city centre businesses accepting it.
You can spend it in high street chains or boutique York shops, at bars and restaurants, in museums and galleries – making it a present which is both flexible and sustainable.
Carl Alsop, operations manager of the BID, said, “The York Gift Card already gives great choice, so it’s nice to be able to offer a choice of designs as well, and we hope to add more in the future.”

The York Gift Card is a preloaded Mastercard and can be redeemed in multiple transactions in a variety of businesses in the city centre area.
This BID initiative is a great gift for any occasion and can also be used as an employee incentive or bonus scheme.
If anyone has an existing card which has expired during lockdown they should email the BID on info@theyorkbid.com for a replacement card.
The card can be bought online at the York Gift Card website with free postage – or in person from RueB, York Gin or The Potions Cauldron.
Two new sign-ups
The latest businesses to join the scheme are outdoor specialist shop Rohan on Stonegate, and Burgsy’s restaurant on Castlegate.

The striking new Clifford’s Tower design is from a silk painting by Jonathan, who is resident artist at The Braithwaite Gallery.
“My design is drawn directly onto pre-washed, dried and stretched white silk using a Gutta resist,” Jonathan said. “It requires a steady hand and concentration.”
