Ageing and outdated traffic signals at the Crichton Avenue and Wigginton Road junction are set to be replaced next month by City of York Council – causing short-term disruption for motorists.

Works are estimated to take around six weeks to complete and will start on Monday 4 January.

New, more reliable, traffic signals will be installed.

Layout changes will include introducing new pedestrian crossings, extended double yellow lines on the access road, kerb line changes and removing the small pedestrian island on Crichton Avenue.

The council says they new traffic signals will be more efficient and more reliable.  It will also link the system direct to the council’s traffic and control centre, so that officers can manage the flow of traffic better in busy periods by adjusting traffic lights to suit the conditions.

To help minimise disruption, work will be carried out from 9am – 4.30pm during the week and also will take place on Saturdays and Sundays from 9am – 4pm. Temporary signals replicating, as closely as possible, the current operation of the junction will be in place throughout the works.

A City of York Council spokesperson said: “During the works it is anticipated that there will be significant delays when travelling through the junction.

“Those using the junction are urged to plan ahead, allow more time for journeys on these routes and to consider alternatives and to use public transport where possible.”

Bus services will be operating as normal for the majority of the works but passengers are advised to visit www.itravelyork.info/ for more information.

Council FAQs

Here’s all the answers to key questions about the roadworks from City of York Council.

What is happening?

We will be upgrading the junction of Wigginton Road /  Crichton Avenue by replacing the old outdated traffic signals with new, more reliable, ones. We’ll also be improving the pedestrian crossing facilities by providing  Signal controlled crossings across both arms of the junction.

Why?

The scheme will see new equipment, which is cheaper to run and more reliable, installed and pedestrian facilities improved.  By managing traffic more efficiently it will also make journey times more reliable.

When is it happening?

Work will start on Monday 4 January May and is expected to take six weeks. To help minimise disruption work will be carried out from 9am – 4.30pm on week days. Work will also take place on Saturdays and Sundays from 9am – 4pm.

What is the impact on traffic during the works?

It’s likely that the work will cause significant disruption to traffic. We’re aiming to keep this to a minimum by working in phases to allow the junction to function as well as possible. However, residents, businesses and visitors are advised to expect delays.

Emergency vehicles, including ambulances from York Hospital, will be given access at all times.

What will happen to buses?

During this time it is anticipated that all bus services will operate as normal, however there will be delays when travelling through the junction. For more information about your bus route visit www.itravelyork.info/buses

Will I still be able to cross the road?

Some temporary footway closures will be in place to allow works to be undertaken, however, full access will be retained to all businesses and properties during construction and pedestrian and cyclist routes through the works will be clearly signed. Traffic marshals will be on site to assist between 7am and 7pm.

Will I still be able to cycle on this route?

Access to and from the Foss Islands foot/cycleway will be maintained at all times throughout the works.

What if I live or work in the area?

Firstly, we would like to apologise for any disruption that the works cause.  We ask that if you have any issues please speak to the staff on site and we’ll try to correct any issues straight away if we can.  We sent information to residents and businesses in the area mid December to give as much notice as possible.  Access to all properties and businesses will be retained at all times but we ask that residents and businesses are patient and cooperate where possible.  Traffic marshals will be on site to assist.

What about alternative travel plans?

Residents are urged to plan ahead, allow more time for journeys on these routes and to consider alternatives and to use public transport where possible. All bus services will be operating as normal for the duration of the works. For more information visit www.itravelyork.info/
