Two yellow weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued by the Met Office.

The first warning covers much of North Yorkshire and is in force from 5pm today (Tuesday, 28 November) to 11am tomorrow.

York is not covered by the warning, but Malton, Pickering and Helmsley all are.

The Met Office says: “Icy patches and snow are possible, and may lead to hazardous conditions on Tuesday evening and overnight into Wednesday morning.”

This is what to expect:

  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

A second yellow weather warning for snow and ice then comes into force from 5pm tomorrow (Wednesday, 29 November) to 11am on Thursday (30 November).

For this warning, the Met Office says: “Showers, falling as snow inland, will lead to icy patches and hazardous conditions.”

The cold snap is because we sit in the grip of cold northern Scandinavian air.

Met Office chief meteorologist Neil Armstrong said: “Northern and north-eastern areas of the UK in the moist north / north-easterly airflow continue to see a chance of snow or sleet.”

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber cold-health alert for the health sector covering northern regions of England which runs to December 5.

It says: “Significant impacts are probable across the health and social care sector due to forecast weather conditions, including: observed increase in mortality across the population, particularly in the 65+ age group or those with certain underlying health conditions, but impacts may also be seen in younger age groups”
