Two flood alerts have been issued for York as Storm Babet continues to bring rain and high winds to the area.

Flood alerts mean ‘flooding is possible – be prepared’.

One alert is for the Upper River Ouse. It says: “River levels are rising on the upper river Ouse due to persistent and heavy rainfall associated with Storm Babet.

“Areas most at risk include riverside footpaths and low-lying land in York and to the south as far as Naburn Lock, including Kings Staith, Queens Staith, and South Esplanade.

“Further heavy rainfall is forecast throughout today, Friday

“Our incident rooms are open and we are carrying out operational activity, as well as operating Foss barrier.”

The river level at Viking Recorder is predicted to rise sharply in the next few days, with it forecast to reach 4.32m by 1.15am on Sunday, well above the 1.9m top of the normal range.

The other alert is for the Tidal River Ouse from Naburn Lock to Selby.

It says: “Areas most at risk include the tidal foreshore and agricultural land adjacent to the river in the Cawood, Kelfield, Wistow and Selby areas.”

Meanwhile, travel around the area remains challenging. LNER says: “Our train services are severely disrupted today. Please do not travel.”

Travel between York and London is being disrupted by “heavy rain flooding the railway between Grantham and Newark North Gate”.

There are no trains north of Edinburgh. And no trains are running between Derby and Sheffield or Nottingham.
