“Strap yourselves in!” – Lockdown comedy is coming to York theatre

Fri 30 Jul, 2021 by Rachel Rogers

Anarchy is about to go down at Joseph Rowntree Theatre.

During various lockdowns a lot of us will have had many dreaded Zoom meetings…

Mics not working, cameras switched off – the list of problems could go on.

The Naloxone Theatre Ensemble bring The Local Authority to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre from Thursday 7 to Saturday 9 August, which shows just how chaotic these meetings can get.

What starts off as a local council emergency budget cutting meeting on Zoom for the first time, rapidly descends into an unstructured free for all and a chaotic mêlée.

Move over Jackie Weaver!

From embezzlement to secret alcoholism to hitmen – it’s just another day at the local council.

The Naloxone Theatre Ensemble (NTE) was founded by Paul Engers and Tom Wilson, who have been involved in various projects and workshops together since 1996.

Tom Wilson spoke with YorkMix to tell us more about the inspiration behind the show and what audiences can expect.

“I really liked the idea of putting a play in a Zoom meeting and occasionally letting it break out into reality.

“It was a challenge, lots of premeditated accidents for anyone who has used Zoom you will see how it can be manipulated to look as if you don’t know what you are doing when really you can blame technology – a great excuse!

“With The Local Authority you can expect something to offend everyone. Great music, eccentric dancing and ancient and antiquated insults.

“We are hoping it will give folk an opportunity to laugh their way out of the doldrums of this pandemic.”

The Local Authority is directed and written by Tom Wilson, with choreography by Karen Nadin.

The cast includes Emma Turner, Satish Korata, Joel Cambell, Stewart Mathers, Kate Hargrave, Rowan Naylor-Mayers, Karen Nadin, David Taylor, Gary Parsons, Tim Nixon and Martin Handsley.

Tickets cost £12 and can be purchased from the Joseph Rowntree website. The play is suitable for over 16s only.

Tom added, “Strap yourselves in, it’s going to be a bumpy ride!”
