City of York Council is bringing its streetlighting service in-house for the first time, creating an opportunity to expand its business area, providing both an installation and maintenance service to other public/private bodies and developers within the city.
Amey LG has held the contract for the council’s streetlight maintenance since 2000, but with reduced funding from Central Government this option has been reviewed to consider how best to make this service both efficient and effective.
Bringing this service in-house will create an opportunity to generate additional income to the council, whilst opening up other possibilities including the ability to enter into joint procurement arrangements with other authorities.
Cllr David Levene, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: “Providing an in-house streetlight maintenance service makes sense. It’s giving the council the ability to generate additional income, which will contribute to the budget savings without affecting the level of service.
“It’s also creating greater flexibility in setting and amending targets, performance and the ability to prioritise budgets within the service. In addition to this, residents and businesses will see an improvement in the speed of the service – when emergencies do occur we can now react more easily to call outs.”
It is anticipated that the in-house service will start from October 2013.
