The King and Queen Consort will make their first visit to York tomorrow (Wednesday, 9 November) since he ascended the throne.
Hundreds of people are expected to greet Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort.
They will arrive late morning and leave in the early afternoon. There will be two parts to their visit.
Part 1: Micklegate Bar
The royal couple are due to arrive late morning at Micklegate Bar. This is the traditional royal entrance to York.
Their majesties will be met by a civic party which will include the Lord Mayor, Cllr David Carr.
The Lord Mayor will invite His Majesty to approach the sword and mace bearers at the gate where the king will touch the sword. The sword bearer will then turn the sword while the mace bearer will turn the mace.
Once the sword and mace bearers stand aside their majesties, escorted by the Lord Mayor, will enter the city through the gateway.
The town clerk will read the ‘Declaration of Welcome’ to the city before the king and queen move on to the Minster.
Part 2: York Minster
The King and Queen Consort will travel to York Minster, where their arrival will be heralded by a peal of bells.
After a short service, the royal couple will meet members of the Minster community and the wider city. At an exhibition in the North Transept, the king will meet stonemason Richard Bossons who designed and carved the statue of Queen Elizabeth II.
They will then leave the Minster for the blessing and unveiling of the statue of the Queen, before leaving York.
Road closures
On Wednesday 9 November, between 9.30am and 11.30am, road closures will be in place on/near Micklegate Bar, including:
- Nunnery Lane (between The Punch Bowl pub and Delrio’s Restaurant)
- Blossom Street
- Bar Lane
- Micklegate (at Priory Street, Priory Lane, Trinity Lane, Barker Lane and St Martin Lane)
Diversions will be via Holgate Road and Scarcroft Road.
At around 10.30am The King and Queen Consort enter the city via Tadcaster Road; roads along the route will be affected by temporary closures, for around 10 to 15 minutes.
After The King and Queen Consort have entered the city, they’ll travel to York Minster. Roads along the route will be affected by temporary closures, for around 10 to 15 minutes, including:
- Micklegate
- Tanner Row
- Tanner Street
- George Hudson Street
- Rougier Street
- Lendal Bridge
- Museum Street
- St Leonard’s Place
- Duncombe Place
Between 9.30am and 1.00pm, road closures will be in place on/near Duncombe Place.
The King and Queen Consort will exit the city via the A19; roads along the route will be affected by temporary road closures for around 10 to 15 minutes.
For public safety:
- barriers will be installed at Micklegate Bar and Duncombe Place on Tuesday 8 November
- the City Walls will be temporarily closed between Lendal Bridge and Victoria Bar, until 12.00 midday.
Travel and parking
Visitors and residents are advised to plan ahead before they travel, please consider:
- operator websites provide information about bus services in York
- Park & Ride (P&R) services will be running, however Poppleton P&R is currently closed
- Askham Bar P&R will be affected by road closures during the royal visit
- Nunnery Lane car park will be open, but access will be via Nunnery Lane (Bishopthorpe Road or Skeldergate Bridge) during road closures.
Toilets
The closest public toilets near to Micklegate Bar are at the Nunnery Lane car park.
The nearest to York Minster are at St Leonard’s Place.
