The Snooks have landed!

Twenty-one of the large friendly monsters are now in place around York, ready to be discovered.

Organised by Make It York with charity partner St Leonard’s Hospice, the Snooks trail runs for the next eight weeks, up till 25 April.

Each Snook you visit will unveil a mystery letter that will form a password to unlock secret prizes on the Visit York website.

The Snooks have been designed by Yorkshire artist Sian Ellis and each sculpture has been sponsored by local businesses, with some being joint sponsored, and paired with artists across the UK to decorate their individual Snooks.

Today (Saturday, 2 March), York’s own Art of Protest Projects is hosting two workshops with The Island teaching young people spray paint art skills.

What is a Snook?

“Snooks are a bookish breed, often found in cosy corners with their faces buried inside the pages of a good book. They’ve been here in York for a long time, as long as even The Norman House (the oldest building in York) but they are a little more hidden away than the historic sights of the city that you’re familiar with. But recently sightings of Snooks have skyrocketed, and it looks like these friendly folk have been enjoying some sightseeing around the city walls.”

At York Explore on Museum Street, York Fostering Service and York Mumbler will be hosting a series of sessions and activities at their Snook, linked in with York Literature Festival.

And there’s live doodling with Little Vikings at Delta Hotels by York Marriott.
