This is the three-storey, £10m state-of-the-art facility planned for York Hospital.

One of the biggest developments at the hospital for years, the vascular imaging unit will ‘greatly enhance’ treatment for patients with heart conditions.

The trust has submitted a planning application for the new unit, and work could begin in spring next year, opening 18 months later.

It will provide two additional cardio-vascular laboratories with improved recovery facilities, a state of the art hybrid operating theatre, and an expanded post-surgical patient recovery facility.

The type of procedures carried out in the department could include diagnosing problems with blood flow, procedures for patients with heart problems such as putting in stents or pace makers, and other crucial treatments.

Biggest investment

It will provide ‘provide enhanced, high quality, care’
Built near the south entrance to the hospital. next to the pedestrian footpath known as Bridge Lane, it will provide 3,055 sq m of floor space. A spokesman for the hospital said:

  • This is one of the trust’s biggest capital investments for many years.

The facility will allow the trust to provide clinical services to a growing number of patients needing vascular procedures, as well as provide enhanced, high quality, care.

It would be built near the south entrance to the hospital next to the pedestrian footpath.

Where the new unit will be located
The plans were first put forward in 2014 and the design has been refined in response to a consultation.

Planning documents say the flagship vascular imaging unit will “meet an identified clinical need at the existing York Teaching Hospital and provide for enhanced diagnosis and care.

“The existing unit has become outdated and there is a need for additional services to meet current and future demand.”
