People are being warned to be vigilant when selling goods via social media after a series of robberies.

North Yorkshire Police have arrested a man following three motorbike thefts – one at knife-point.

It happened after people arranged to sell their off-road bikes via Facebook Marketplace.

The ‘buyer’ arranged to meet the sellers in areas they didn’t know.

The thief then asked to have a test ride of the bike and made off on it without paying.

On one occasion, the seller was threatened with a knife before handing over the bike.

The incidents happened on Friday 18 October in Stokesley, and Saturday 26 October and Friday 1 November in Thornton le Moor, between Thirsk and Northallerton.

Another bike needed its owner

An 18-year-old man from North Yorkshire has been arrested in connection with these incidents and one motorbike has been recovered. The police investigation continues.

Following the incidents, a North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “We are thoroughly investigating these incidents and have made an arrest. But we’d urge you to take care when selling items via social media platforms.

“Only send money through trusted platforms and arrange the exchange in well-lit areas that you are familiar with.”

Two bikes still need to be reunited with their rightful owners. One is a white Yamaha YZ85 with a purple seat and the other is a Talaria Sting R electric motorcycle in black with blue stickers. There is a plate on the side saying 202406.

If you can help identify the owners, are a witness or another potential victim, you can get in touch with police on the numbers below.
