Top-rated York restaurant closes – to the dismay of city foodies

‘Excellent’, ‘superb’, ‘incredible’ – these three food reviews left in the last few days show why it was one of York’s top-rated restaurants.

But sadly Krakatoa will not receive another after closing down.

The Indonesian restaurant on Tanner Row is shut and empty. Owner Tim Potter posted a brief message on Facebook on Monday (October 31) to reveal the news:

Ladies & Gentlemen we regret to announce that Krakatoa is now closed. Thank you for all your support.

We will now take some time off, visit family in Indonesia, & try to find premises that don’t leak next time.

Tim set up the restaurant in 2013. An artist, the two-floor restaurant was filled with his artworks.

Previously he had lived in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. With his wife Deeche, an expert in Indonesian cooking, “they combined their talents in this one building; him offering a feast for the eyes and her a feast for the belly,” in the words of YorkMix writer Ron Godfrey.

Krakatoa had been refurbished over the summer. News of its closure caused dismay among customers. “Absolutely gutted. Best restaurant in town!” posted Karl Mullen.

“Oh no! Sorry to hear the bad news Tim, loved the food there,” wrote Aimie Jane.

TripAdvisor is filled with glowing praise for both the food and the friendly service at Krakatoa.

More than one reviewer described it as “the best restaurant in York” while others have travelled a long way to enjoy its authentic taste of Indonesia.

The final word to our own reviewer Ron Godfrey: “As far as I was concerned what emerged from the Krakatoan kitchen was every bit as impressive as the paintings prepared in the restaurant’s basement studio.”
