Moving music will take on a whole new meaning at the railway museum, as Amelia Crawford reports

Do you like to be moved by live music? Then head to the National Railway Museum this Saturday, September 6, when it hosts the first Music On Rails – MOR Music Festival.

From the afternoon to late at night, some of York’s top talent will be performing in the Station Hall at the NRM, all for free. And there will be some very special intimate shows on board one of the trains as it travels up and down the tracks.

The event has been staged by independent music shop and promoters MOR Music.

“We’ve had a huge amount of interest in this event from both bands and the general public,” said Lynne O’Dea of MOR Music.

“This is going to be a truly memorable day and we’re looking forward to seeing it all come together.”

What to expect

Thirteen bands will perform at the back of the Station Hall, starting from 3pm and finishing at midnight.

And those lucky enough to have tickets can hear music on the move as musicians play in the Director’s Saloon carriage between 2pm and 8.45pm.

They will be playing as the carriage travels along the quarter mile railway track behind the South Hall.

“This is an exciting line-up and we are looking forward to hosting such great acts,” said NRM head of operations Jim Lowe.

Tickets are not required for entrance into the museum nor are they needed to watch the Station Hall performers.

Tickets for the Director’s Saloon were extremely limited and have subsequently sold out.

Food is available from the café and a licensed bar is also available.

Who’s performing

Among the popular and talented artists taking to the stage are…

  • Beth McCarthy, best known for doing so well on BBC One show The Voice
  • Boss Caine, described as “really something” by BBC Radio 2 presenter Bob Harris
  • Berlin Black: founded in 2008 the rock and post-punk band are signed by Trash Vogue Records
  • Barcode Zebra, known for their soul-tinged pop funk genre of music
