Changes to one of York’s busiest road junctions are now out for consultation.

City of York Council is undertaking a targeted consultation on a scheme to improve the A19-A64 interchange.

The planned improvements would see:

  • an extra inbound lane on the A19 on approach to the Designer Outlet / A64 roundabout
  • a new inbound bus lane between the two roundabouts linked to the existing bus lane on the A19 north of the junction.

The consultation is the first phase of the A19 Pinch Point Scheme. York received about £2 million for this scheme from a government fund aimed at supporting growth and tackling congestion.

As no residents live within close proximity to the first phase of works, the council only wants to hear from businesses and those users directly affected by the scheme.

They are asked to submit comments by Friday, December 12. More details on the council’s A19 Pinch Point Scheme web page.

Cllr David Levene, cabinet member for transport, said: “These proposals are the first phase in an important scheme to tackle the issues we regularly see on this important arterial road, in addition to ‘future proofing’ it.

“Future phases will include some works further north on the A19 towards Fulford and will hopefully include a raising of the A19 road level to help prevent the flooding we have seen in re cent years in this area.”

It is anticipated that, subject to approval, construction would commence in spring 2015.

Future phases will be consulted on separately to this first phase in early 2015, to be constructed later in the year.

Plans for Phase 1 are also available to view at a Fulford parish council meeting on Tuesday, December 2.
