Three major attractions are to stay closed as Storm Floris sweeps in tomorrow (Monday).

It comes as road and rail warnings have been issued ahead of the forecast strong winds and rainfall.

The Met Office has already issued a yellow warning for wind covering most of York and North Yorkshire from 6am till midnight tomorrow.

The York Maze has said it will be shut by tomorrow’s storm.

In a post on social media, it said: “Due to a yellow weather warning for powerful winds issued by the Met Office for Monday 4th August 2025, York Maze has taken the difficult decision to close for the day.

“We realise this will be disappointing for customers planning to visit tomorrow, however the safety of our guests and staff is always our top priority.

“All customers with a booking on Monday 4th August have been contacted via email directly. If you have not received your email, please check your junk mail.

Castle Howard has taken the same decision. It posted: “Castle Howard will fully close on Monday 4th August due to the forecast high winds.

“The house, gardens, playground, stable courtyard, farm shop, coffee shop, courtyard cafe and garden centre will be closed all day.

“This is for the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

“All pre-bookers will be contacted by our team on Monday 4th August to rearrange their tickets, or for a full refund. Please do not travel to Castle Howard, the car park will be closed.”

Also Piglets Adventure Farm will be shut on Monday to keep everyone safe. It said: “If you have tickets booked for Monday, you will have received an email with details of how to rebook.

“We thank you in advance for your understanding and we hope to welcome you soon under better skies.”

Beningbrough Hall, Nunnington Hall, Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal and Monk Park Farm are among other attractions that have closed.

Travel warnings

Rail passengers are being warned of potential disruption by the weather.

Network Rail has urged people to check before they travel tomorrow.

LNER said: “Storm Floris will bring severe weather, including heavy wind and rain, to much of northern England and Scotland on Monday 4 August.

“As a result, we are advising that customers do not travel north of Newcastle on Monday 4th August.

“Alternative travel options will be extremely limited due to expected road closures and other train operators will also be affected.”

If you have an LNER ticket to travel dated Monday 4th August, they are valid on both Sunday 3rd August until Wednesday 6th August including any connecting trains.

Shaun Jones, of the AA, said: “If you’re planning a journey – especially through exposed or rural areas – it’s worth checking the latest forecast, allow extra time, and be prepared for the unexpected.

“Keep both hands on the wheel, especially on open roads and motorways, and be mindful of high-sided vehicles and cyclists who may be more affected by gusts.

“Watch out for fallen branches or debris, particularly in rural areas – this could be telltale signs of a fallen tree ahead.”
