If you’re a fan of ‘mucky, oozy, deliciously evil’ burgers, we bring good news.

Those are all descriptions of the food on offer at Five Guys burger restaurants – and one will soon open in York.

The US company is currently fitting out 47 Low Petergate – formerly home to the Christmas Angels shop – ready to bring a different burger concept to the city.

Five Guys was started by five brothers in Virgina, US, in 1986. The same family are still involved in the firm.

It first came to the UK with a branch in London’s Covent Garden in 2013. Since then it has expanded through the country, but until now fans had to travel to Harrogate to get their mits on a Five Guys burger.

Now hiring

The recipe for the company’s success is based on everything being hand made.

And you can customise your burger to your heart’s content. The website says:

With burgers, hotdogs, sandwiches and a multitude of toppings, you’ve got more than 250,000 possible topping combinations to choose from (not-to-mention the 1,000 mix-in milkshake combinations).

Chips are hand-cut daily and they don’t use automated cooking timers, “because great cooking is all about knowing instinctively when food is perfectly cooked – based on sight, aroma and texture”.

And the firm says its restaurants have an “electric atmosphere filled with fanatical customers and have the best taste in rock music which can be heard from outside the doors”.

The company is now hiring staff for the York restaurant.

At the time of writing the jobs available include an assistant manage (salary £23-£26K) and shift manager (£9.20 per hour).
