Bake Off semi-finalist Selasi Gbormittah gets an chocolate masterclass from Sophie Jewett of York Cocoa House

The coolest man ever to wield a wooden spoon was in York this week to make an Easter TV special.

Selasi, who was a viewers’ favourite after reaching the Great British Bake Off semi-final last year, visited York’s Chocolate Story and York Cocoa House.

He was putting together a sweet segment for BBC1 show Saturday Kitchen, which aired today (April 15).

Big chocolate fan

The banker turned baker, full name Selasi Gbormittah, learned to taste chocolate like a professional at York’s Chocolate Story.

He was also given a guide to the city’s confectionery history from resident expert Bernie Fleck.

“They were particularly interested in the 250th anniversary of Terry’s,” said Jenni Shepherd, PR manager at the attraction.

“They had a lovely time filming at York’s Chocolate Story and a lot of our visitors will be tuning in to see if they can spot themselves.

“Selasi is as lovely in real life as he seemed on Bake Off. He is also a big chocolate fan!”

Definitely coming back

Then it was off to York Cocoa House to make Easter eggs.

His teacher was Cocoa House owner Sophie Jewett. “He’s been an expert chocolate maker today,” she said.

“We’ve got an awful lot of chocolate that needs making still, with Easter weekend ahead, so we’re ready to put him to work.”

“I love chocolate. I could eat chocolate all day if I could get away with it,” Selasi said.

‘I don’t really stress out’

Shelling out at the Cocoa House

He was a big fan of Sophie and the York Cocoa House. “She’s feeding me a lot of chocolate, so it’s the best place I think in York.”

It was his first visit to York. “The buildings are really cool, the chocolate is amazing, the people are really friendly – so I’m definitely coming back here,” he told YorkMix.

And he has fond memories of his stint on Bake Off – where he had the reputation for being the coolest person in the tent.

“I went in to have fun and not to stress myself out. I don’t really stress out in life so I guess that kind of helped me go through the show without shedding a tear.”
