Local school children have used their voices to celebrate what they love about the Selby area and the results sound amazing.

Sing a Song of Selby is a singing and song-writing project working with young people from primary schools in Selby District.

The children have written and performed their own songs based on stories about Selby, working with Sam Dunkley from Performing Arts etc.

The first schools were Selby Community Primary School and Selby Abbey Primary School who wrote their songs in Winter 2021 and recorded them in Spring 2022.

Other budding songwriters will compose their pieces over the next two months as the project moves on to working with other local schools.

Sam Dunkley from Performing Arts etc commented:

“It has been great to work with children from Selby schools to celebrate their place, their community and their town. After a couple of difficult years, it was great to hear children singing their own songs with such confidence and joy. We look forward to continuing our work over the coming months.”

Sing a Song of Selby is part of Selby Stories – an exciting programme of arts and cultural events running until late 2023, celebrating what makes Selby special and unique.

Selby Stories is the cultural programme for the Selby High Street Heritage Action Zone. Running until late 2023, special events will celebrate the town, its history and what makes it unique.

The HSHAZ is part of a government-funded initiative led by Historic England. It aims to breathe new life into local high streets, from regenerating historic buildings to engaging local communities through art and cultural projects.

Selby is one of more than 60 high streets in the country to receive a share of funding from Historic England, along with funding from Selby District Council.
