Some amazing royal memories are due to be screened around our region as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
There’s only two months to go before the UK comes together to celebrate Her Majesty’s unprecedented 70 years of reign, and the Yorkshire and North East Film Archives have curated the perfect film to mark the milestone.
Seen To Be Believed is a new standalone 55-minute film available to community groups, cinemas, local authorities and other organisations, for screening during the Jubilee festivities.
Taking an affectionate look at how the people of Yorkshire and the North East celebrated coronations, jubilees and royal visits through the decades, it draws inspiration from a famous remark by the Queen: “I have to be seen to be believed”.
As well as the visits of our current monarch, the film includes fascinating footage of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
It shows how they broke down barriers during visits and appearances, changing the public’s perception of the Royal Family – something that The Queen herself would build upon when she took to the throne.
Among the royal events in York and North Yorkshire chronicled in the film are:
- Harrogate and Knaresborough Coronation celebrations, 1953
- Building of the Ingleborough shelter to commemorate the Coronation, 1953
- King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visiting Terry’s in York, 1937
- Queen visits the 100th Great Yorkshire Show, 1957
- Fearby village Silver Jubilee celebrations, 1977
- Queen opens City of York Council’s Summer Daze programme in Museum Gardens, 2000
- Queen visits York as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour, 2012.
The film takes a look through the lens at street parties and pageants, bunting, banners and flag waving, and discovers what the Royal Family – The Queen in particular – means to the people of our region.
All footage in the film was made solely by Yorkshire and North East Filmmakers, both amateur and professional.
