As the Queen becomes Britain’s longest reigning monarch, some of her many visits to Yorkshire are recalled in a fascinating new film.

More details

A Right Royal Yorkshire Occasion is a unique montage of regal tours of the region by monarchs from Queen Victoria onwards.

Created by Yorkshire Film Archive, based at York St John University, the new film is being screened at Beningbrough Hall from September 8 onwards – the day before Elizabeth II takes over from Victoria as our longest serving monarch.

The clips span 115 years and are taken from more than 70 films.

uAs well as featuring our present queen and rare footage of Queen Victoria from 1897, the film shows footage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana – as well as the flag-waving Yorkshire folk who greeted their arrival.

You might even see yourself…

‘Quite moving’

The short film is an addition to the Royals: then and now display of portraits, loaned to Beningbrough Hall by the National Portrait Gallery, which comes to an end on November 1.

“This is the only chance visitors can see this fantastic short film created especially for us,” said Jane Whitehead, head of visitor operations at Beningbrough.

“It’s quite moving in parts and you might even spot yourself in the crowds!”

Graham Relton of Yorkshire Film Archive said:

Professional and amateur filmmakers alike get out their cameras for special occasions, and there are none more special than a royal celebration.

Whether it’s a formal visit or the fun of a local street party with bunting, we have brought together over 70 royal films from the Yorkshire Film Archive vaults.
