Villagers create giant Advent calendar using their front windows

Window Advent Calendar Rufforth - PIctures by Michelle Hills

It started last year as a way to unite the people of a village near York during lockdowns.

Now the Rufforth Front Window Advent Calendar is back for a second time.

The 24 households taking part have each taken a particular day and decorated their front window in different designs.

Michelle Hills has organised the event again this year.

“The first year we tried it was last year during Covid when we were just trying to get a little bit of community spirit going as nobody could meet up.

“Nobody could get close, but we thought we could share some Christmas cheer across the village in an absolutely socially distanced way. It was just a way of lighting up the village and letting people wander around and get some fresh air.

“To be honest last year it was a little tricky to find 24 households who wanted to take part but this year I managed to find 24 households in no time at all.”

Sandie Dunleavy is from one household that has taken part.

“The idea is that for the 24 days up to Christmas Eve we have 24 beautiful windows on display and it’s a delight to take part.

We were given December 4th for our window so made ours four calling birds along with other decorations.”

Villagers didn’t have to follow 12 Days of Christmas, I know that one is one the theme of the lovely film The Snowman”

Michelle Hills added: “We always produce a little map so that people know where they’re going around the village and the local school children go out on a trail of the village to see all the windows at the end of term.

“It worked well the first year so we’ve gone with it again. It’s really lovely to have all sorts of people joining in”
