Ward salt bins to be filled as temperatures remain below zero

Wed 16 Jan, 2013 by Press Release

Issued by City of York Council

City of York Council will be filling all salt bins across the city, as forecasts predict temperatures will reach minus 8 tonight (Wednesday, January 16).

Temperatures are set to remain below zero for the rest of this week, so in addition to the 199 salt bins which were filled at the start of the winter season in November, the council will be filling 170 ward bins across the city today.

Cllr David Levene, Cabinet Member of Environmental Services, said: “Our priority is always to ensure the safety of residents, and as temperatures have remained low and decreased overnight I have taken the decision first thing this morning with my officer team to get all ward salt bins refilled, over and above the core highways-funded bins we have already replenished.

“I made a commitment that if we experienced severe weather conditions we would re-evaluate if and when ward salt bins would be filled. With temperatures well below freezing and a forecast for more snow in the coming days, this is the right action to take to protect residents’safety.

“Tomorrow I will be out with our gritting teams ensuring the service is running smoothly. I encourage volunteers to come forward and join the existing army of snow wardens across the city to help our gritting teams make their local streets safer places to get around”.

Provisions are in place so that the council’s front line teams are on standby 24/7 to grit major roads, footpaths, cycle paths and fill salt bins across the city. The council has 2,800 tonne of grit currently in stock (3,000 tonnes is the maximum amount national reserves will allow for York).
