York Unlocked is launching this weekend – a new festival that takes a look inside some of the city’s most iconic buildings.
Founded by Kathy King, the festival will provide special access to over 50 buildings that are not regularly opened to the public – free of charge. It takes place across the city centre this weekend on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 October.
Ahead of the festival, YorkMix took a sneak peak into three of the buildings being unlocked over the weekend: Duncombe Place Masonic Lodge, Bootham School and Cumberland House.

Jenny Dinning, head of external relations at Bootham School, said “We’re delighted to be taking part in York Unlocked.
“As a school we feel it’s very important to be part of the wider community and we really want to welcome as many people as possible into our magnificent buildings.”
Mike Curley, secretary at Duncombe Place Masonic Lodge, said “The York Lodge is one of the only purpose built lodges in the north of England.
“It’s full of history. We have the records and minutes of all the meetings from 1777, and a lot of the artefacts here are priceless.
“I’m sure that we will have something of interest for people of all ages.”
