A York store has been closed suddenly – after a visit from the bailiffs.
Jigsaw, the women’s fashion brand, is now shut.
There are still sale notices in the window of its historic Stonegate home, and stock can still be seen inside.
Notices at the property say it was seized on Monday (11 August) by an officer working for enforcement agents Penham Excel, acting on behalf of the landlords.
The statement says: “Any attempt by you or your agents to enter the premises will result in criminal / civil proceedings being taken against you.
“As the former tenant of this property you are required under Section 12 of the Torts Act 1977 to arrange with your landlord collection of your goods from these premises.
“If you do not arrange collection of said goods within 14 DAYS of this notice the goods will be removed and sold as necessary.”
The notice was directed at Robinson Webster (Holdings) Limited, the parent company of Jigsaw.
Jigsaw has been trading since 1970 and has “grown to become a world-renowned fashion retailer”, according to its website.
Number 37 Stonegate has been home to York’s Jigsaw branch for many years.
It’s a Grade II* listed building, dating back to the 1700s and comes complete with a coat of arms.
A photograph in the window show a royal visit to the shop by Queen Mary and Prince Edward, later King Edward VIII. At that time it was home to Greenwoods the antique dealers.
Jigsaw is still displaying an entry for the York store on its website. We’ve asked the company for a comment about what’s happened.
