Poems will become songs in front of a live audience at a special concert at the Chapel of York St John University on Friday 8th March at 7.30pm. Delivered by Sounds Lyrical, the concert features readings from local poets alongside musical settings of their poems by contemporary composers.

The event will be programmed by the Sounds Lyrical Project which exists to forge new relationships between poets and composers and to bring new audiences to poetry and classical songs. In 2012, Sounds Lyrical made guest appearances at the Ryedale Book Festival and the York 800 book-launch at the Guildhall. This event will be their first solo show.

The poets at the event will be Rose Drew, Alan Gillott, Lizzi Linklater, Andy Humphrey, Daniela Nunnari and Gillian Byrom-Smith and the composers David Power, Peter Byrom-Smith, David Lancaster and Edward Caine. The songs will be sung by Ben Lindley with Josephine Peach on the piano.

Sounds Lyrical Director David Power said: “This exciting event will not only give audiences a chance to hear wonderful contemporary poems and songs; it will also give a unique insight into the different creative processes which take place when musicians and poets work together.

“We were very encouraged by how well our work was received by the audiences at Ryedale and the Guildhall and we are confident that those who come to St John’s for our first solo show will have a fascinating and enjoyable evening of poetry and song.’’

Tickets for the show are available on the door and are £5 or £3 concessions. There will be an interval and the venue includes access to a fully licensed bar.
