After announcing the departure of Jackie McNamara, York City moved swiftly to advertise the vacant manager’s job.

Applicants with “the required coaching badges and suitable qualifications to manage a professional football club” were asked to contact the club by Friday (October 14).

In early betting online bookies BetVictor installed former head coach of Leeds United Neil Redfearn as 3/1 favourite to replace McNamara. He has coached at Bootham Crescent before.

Tony Mowbray (former manager of West Brom, Middlesbrough and Coventry City) is second favourite at 4/1, with Mark Yates (Cheltenham Town, Crawley Town) at 6/1.

Ex Cambridge, Southport, Luton and Tranmere Rovers manager Gary Brabin is quoted at 8/1, as is Gary Mills who took York City back into the Football League when manager here in 2012.

Other notable names in the list include former Welsh international Dean Saunders (12/1), one of the BBC’s pundits during this year’s European Championships, who has managed clubs including Wrexham, Wolves and Crawley.

Nick Barmby, who managed Hull City after a playing career with the likes of Tottenham, Liverpool, Leeds and England, is at 14/1, while former Chelsea midfielder and Leeds manager Dennis Wise is one of a handful of names as 25/1 outsiders.

Meanwhile the Press is reporting that former York City striker Andy Bishop is interested in the job
