It’s going to be big… Primark

Work is now underway to transform three empty units at York’s Monks Cross Shopping Centre into one huge Primark.

The units, which once housed Marks and Spencer, Sports Direct and Laura Ashley, are being converted into a branch of the value fashion outlet.

When construction is completed, including the addition of mezzanine floors in each of the three units, the megastore will boast 57,600 sq ft of retail space – far bigger than the already pretty impressive 34,400 sq ft store planned for Coppergate in the city centre.

And retail bosses say the much anticipated retailer will employ 222 staff.

Katherine Sharp, Monks Cross manager, said:

Monks Cross Shopping has worked tirelessly with Primark on continued negotiations over the past two years and are delighted we can now begin the works to realise the ambition of bringing the much-anticipated retailer to Monks Cross.

A Primark spokesperson said:

We look forward to opening a store at Monks Cross Shopping providing our customers with amazing fashion at amazing prices.

No opening date has yet been set for Primark to open its Monks Cross store. The move also sees the relocation of Sports Direct and Laura Ashley to new units on the shopping park.

Meanwhile, Clarks is moving into a more streamlined unit on its present Monks Cross location later in March. It will take up half the room of the previous store.

No retailer has yet been lined up for the unit freed up by the Clarks move.
