** UPDATE: The York Dungeon was due to reopen 1 January 2024 **

A York attraction is closed today (Saturday) due to the floods – and it will be shut again tomorrow.

Water has come into the York Dungeon as the swollen River Ouse reached 4.3m.

The river has encroached a fair way up Cumberland Street – the Dungeon is on the corner of the street at its junction with Clifford Street.

General manager Mark Mattinson said earlier: “The York Dungeon is closed today due to a small amount of flood water having entered the bottom floor of our building.

“It is not as deep as during the last time this happened in February 2022 when we were closed for three days, and we are hoping to be able to reopen very soon.

“Our guest experience team are working hard to contact all guests and we will continue to update when we know more via our website and social media channels.”

Later, he confirmed that the dungeon would be shut again tomorrow (Sunday).

He said the York Dungeon is offering free walking tours for people with pre-booked tickets and they will be able to validate their tickets to visit the main Dungeon attraction again in the next 12 months.

A member of staff met visitors at the door today to explain the situation. Any further queries can be sent to yorkguests@merlinentertainments.biz.

In 2022, the Dungeon team found about about six inches of water in the building.

During the Boxing Day floods of 2015, the attraction was badly inundated and closed for some time.
