Acomb Market could soon be a permanent fixture.

After a successful trial, the market should see its status upgraded by City of York Council at a meeting next week.

Cllr Keith Aspden, the executive member for economic development, will consider proposals to give the market a permanent footing by amending York’s 600-year-old Markets Charter.

The markets have been running since June this year, after local traders group Acomb Alive! gained nearly £18,000 in council funding to help promote Front Street and the local economy.

Since then there has been an increase in shopper footfall in Acomb and a consistent rise in the number of market stalls taking part in the event.

Getting the area buzzing

Currently the Markets Charter does not permit any markets within six and two-thirds miles of Shambles Market – unless they are on a trial basis or have received a licence from the council. Acomb should now follow Haxby as the second area in York to be given the right to hold a market through an amendment to the charter.

Cllr Aspden said: “The Acomb Market has gone from strength to strength over the last few months, and will be a key part of a thriving local economy in Acomb.

“Congratulations to Acomb Alive! and all the businesses they represent for their work in making the markets such a success.”

Chair of Acomb Alive! Cllr Sue Hunter thanked the traders and shoppers for makings its events a success. She said:

Acomb Alive! is all about getting the area buzzing and encouraging residents to shop locally. I am delighted with how the market has been going and this will give us an extra boost.

There is more work ahead too and we should look at how we can make the area more attractive and accessible.
