In a defiant response to the Paris attacks, York musicians are staging a charity gig which will ‘give the finger to terrorists and religious fascists everywhere’.

Nous Sommes Bataclan

The Crescent Community Venue, 8 The Crescent, York YO24 1AW

Fri Nov 27 @ 7pm

Free entry, collections taken for charity

Facebook event

The Nous Sommes Bataclan concert has been organised by Alastair Hamilton, bass player with local band Soma Crew.

It is a show of solidarity with the victims and survivors of the shocking attack at the Bataclan live music venue in the French capital.

Alistair said he is “very aware of the wider tragedy of terrorist violence around the world, Islamic and otherwise”.

He added:

In this particular instance I felt especially moved to act by the nature of the target – one with which I, as a life-long musician and lover of live music have such a close affinity.

It is just too easy to imagine this atrocity having happened anywhere, and to any of us.

So many friends and acquaintances were attending or playing gigs that night.

It was an attack on freedom of thought and freedom of expression – values that are absolutely at the heart of every artistic endeavour. We cannot afford to take them for granted.

Starry line-up

Lending their formidable talents to the line-up are local singer-songwriters Simon Snaize and David Keegan.

Sam Forrest of Nine Black Alps and The Sorry Kisses and trashy indie-pop pedlars Junk are confirmed.

Also on the bill are post-punk space cadets Soma Crew and the engagingly shambolic Missing Kids. Guests from further afield will include an acoustic set from Leeds indie-folk prog-popsters Silverlode.

The woman described by the Guardian as a “haunting honeyed solo songwriter” Edwina Hayes is the latest to join the line up.

Painter and printer Jo Walton, who runs Rogues Atelier on Fossgate, will also be creating a large-scale artwork in the course of the evening, which will involve the participation of willing attendees…

Collections will be taken in aid of Refugee Action York and Refugee START.
