Tickets went on sale for the start of the Tour de France at 9am today (January 23) – and all 20,000 were snapped up by 1.30pm.
The free tickets for the Grand Départ event at York Racecourse on July 6 were released by York council via the racecourse website. Three thousand went in the first hour alone.
“What an amazing response!” said Sonja Crisp, the councillor in charge of leisure. “It just shows what an appetite there is for this, the world’s largest single sporting event, in one of the world’s most beautiful cities.”
Will more tickets be made available – after all the racecourse regular hosts crowds larger than 20,000?
“Everyone’s safety has to be the priority and we have to consider the quality of their experience, so a decision will be made later in spring,” Cllr Crisp said.
“Meanwhile there are still many, many more opportunities to enjoy the race around the city which are yet to be announced.”
Anyone finding they no longer need their tickets or have spare, are requested to contact the racecourse for the booking to be cancelled and the ticket reallocated.
